Progressive National Baptist Convention Inc. | General Secretary Emeritus

The Rev. Dr. Tyrone S. Pitts served as the General Secretary of the Progressive National Baptist Convention Inc. (PNBC) for 20 years and has continued in retirement to serve as the General Secretary Emeritus.   For the last 40 years, Dr. Pitts has been an ecumenist and currently serving the PNBC as its Ecumenical Officer on the General Board of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA (NCCC) and the World Council of Churches (WCC) in Geneva, Switzerland. He has served on the WCC’s Executive Committee, Central Committee, as a Commissioner on the Programme to Combat Racism.   He is Executive Director of the PNBC Community Development Corporation Inc. He is the Co-Chair of the Equity Task Force of the Coalition to Transform Advanced Care and is a member of the Board of Directors of Capital Caring.   Dr. Pitts was the Former Chair of the Board of Directors of the Morehouse School of Religion, The New Baptist Covenant and the Baptist Joint Committee.   Dr. Pitts served as the Director of Racial Justice for the Division of Church and Society and the Prophetic Justice Unit of the NCCC.   Dr. Pitts received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Fine Arts Education and Philosophy from Virginia State College in Petersburg, Virginia.   He received his Master of Divinity Degree from Colgate Rochester, Bexley Hall, Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, New York.   He studied at Union Theological Seminary and earned his Doctor of Ministry Degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
